Sorry for the delay. WordPress ate the first version.
Vincent truly was a Big Man Cat. He lived with our Mommy for 12 years. He loved to eat his foods, lots of crunchy foods, even after he had lost a bunch of teeths. He loved water – splashing around in it, drinking from the tap, and even bathing in it (he would stick his paw in and then wipe his head with it). He loved sleeping on Mommy. He would flop down across her mouth, so she got a mouth full of fur. He would snuggle under her arm. He liked to sleep under the covers. If Mommy was snoring, he would tap her on the mouth to make her stop. If he wanted to sleep in a certain spot, and Mommy wasn’t positioned right, he would paw at her until she moved to the right place. He liked to bite the fur off of our cousin Merlin’s heels, but would cry for Mommy whenever Merlin got too fresh. Don’t tell, but the two of them also liked to snuggle. He liked to play Buffalo with our Uncle M. Uncle M. would get down on his hands and knees, and Vincent would puff up his fur, turn sideways and get all big, then charge him. If Uncle M. was wearing a hat, he loved knocking it off. He was a little jealous of Daddy, but liked to talk to him a lot. He liked to ride in the car and look out the sunroof, even though he had to go to the vet a lot his last few years. His vet always described him as “quiet, but alert.” When he had to sit in the waiting room, he liked to sit with his cage door open and look at dogs. He didn’t want them near him, but found them interesting. He endured an MRI at a children’s hospital, 17 radiation treatments, and six surgeries without complaint. He mostly used it to get more foods out of Mommy. When he stopped eating, Mommy knew that something was truly wrong. He went to the vet hospital for a week of IVs and two blood transfusions. But they couldn’t fix his kidneys, his chest was filling up with fluid so that he couldn’t breathe, and he cried in pain for the first time, so Mommy & Daddy had to help him to the Bridge a year ago today.
UPDATE: The v-e-t stole all of our blood, but all three of us passed our kidney tests and are okay. Our hearts go out to those who didn’t get such good news.
Today we are 10 months old!! We are getting big! The woofie had better watch out! We are fierce kitties who will play with his toys and drink his water whenever we feel like it!
This is the very first picture of us when we came home to live. We were 6 1/2 weeks old. We were so tired from the car ride that we curled up and slept in our carrier for most of the day. Then we were crazy for most of the night!
Tomorrow we are all going to the v-e-t to see if we have kidney failure from eating Nutro. We are all running around like maniacs, and eating and drinking fine, so hopefully we are okay, but Mommy & Daddy want to find out for sure.
Tomorrow is also the one year anniversary of when Vincent who came before went to the Rainbow Bridge because of kidney failure. Please check back tomorrow for a special blog entry for Vincent.
Nutro has always presented itself as being one of the more premium brands. Finding out that it’s made in the same place as the very cheapest brands and that it’s involved in the largest pet food recall I can remember makes me seriously worry about the quality. Avram at New Cat City gives more details and says it better than I could.
Riley, Tiki, and Kesey all love the chunks/slices in sauce versions of the wet food. They’ve tried other foods, but keep going back to Nutro because they like it best. The kitties don’t care much for pate wet food, and Kesey won’t eat it at all.
I went through the garbage for the last week and found 5 cans and 2 pouches of dog food that have the bad dates, and 6 pouches of cat food. That means that Kesey has had 6 days worth in the past week or so, and the kitties have had 3 days worth of the food with the bad dates. Who knows how much of it they ate before that. They all seem fine, but we are getting them checked at the vet on Saturday as a precaution. There was 1 can of food left in the cupboard with a bad date and we have thrown it out.
So now we are trying more new food. I’m mixing Wellness with the dry Nutro because I don’t want anything more to do with them, but switching too fast has given Riley the runs in the past, so I don’t want to rush it. I also bought Natural Balance in case the Wellness doesn’t work out. They had Fromm’s wet food for dinner, and will try Merrick & Wellness again, & also Newman’s Own, Innova, & Felidae later.
Kesey is trying Merrick mixed with his dry Nutro. He ate Merrick Cowboy Cookout wet for dinner and liked it. He’s tried other Merrick wet in the past and did not like it, but I looked at their website and found some that are chunks in gravy like he likes, so hopefully he will keep eating it this time. Later we’ll try Fromm’s, Wellness, and Innova.
If anyone knows of other high quality foods that are chunks/slices/shredded in gravy, I’d appreciate any suggestions.
Has anyone found Avoderm in Ohio? We’ve found Pinnacle, but it’s pate and they won’t eat it. Is Avoderm worth trying?
Sorry to take over their blog, but this is particulary upsetting to us in that we lost Vincent to kidney failure (he did not eat Nutro) almost a year ago on March 24, 2006. We’d appreciate any good thoughts you might send our way.
I’ve known several kitties in my life. None of them liked me. Some hissed. Some swatted. Some hid. I just wanted kitties to like me.
Now I have kitties who like me. And do they ever like me. They drink my water. They play in the space under my food bowls. I chase them; they won’t always run. Sometimes they even chase me! (Okay that’s not so bad.) But why won’t they run? They’ll run a little and then flop down and wave their paws at me. They block the stairs and force me to jump over them. They bat at my feets. They bat at my nose. They steal my toys. They try to sleep on me. They show me their tummies. The boy kitty keeps trying to talk to me. I have no idea what he’s saying. They walk underneath me. Sometimes they’ll stop and sit under me. I’m not a canopy!
They rub up against me. They keep giving me kisses! Kisses!! Don’t they know I’m a fierce Akita! (okay, mixed with a lot of something else) But I’m still fierce! They don’t know who they’re messing with. Hrrmmph!
Today is Daddy’s birthday. We are very excited. We are hoping to steal some cake. We don’t know what cake is, but if he’s eating it, we want it.
